Abstract:

Advances in exploration and production technologies have opened up vast new reservoirs of domestic oil and natural gas in the United States. In this article, the authors survey recent developments and the energy outlook for the future. They conclude that the positive developments in the North American energy supply and technological development could represent a unique win-win for U.S. transportation, economic development, energy, air quality, and climate policy in the next few decades. Meeting these needs will be challenging, but the rapidly improving U.S. energy outlook could lighten the task.
