The study consisted of two main stages. On the first stage, a qualitative research was developed to identify respondent’s motivations and values, and the way they relate physical surroundings and modal choice. The second stage was based on a quantitative analysis. The objective of this stage was to analyze the relationship between walking and different factors, including the urban form perceived characteristics, and the individuals’ attributes and travel attitudes. This work improves on previous studies performed on developing cities by incorporating travel attitudes and the perception of urban characteristics into the analysis, and by analyzing both the frequency and the proportion of walking trips. The authors propose the use of beta regression models to analyze proportion of walking trips in order to attempt an improved adjustment to the expected distribution of this variable. The Proportion models demonstrated a better adjustment to the data than the Frequency models. The results show that, in Porto Alegre, the urban form has an impact on walking trips even after accounting for travel attitudes. However, the relationship is primarily a function of attitudinal and socioeconomic characteristics of travelers and secondarily a function of urban form. The results indicated that travel attitudes and car availability are the most important factors affecting walking.
