Availability: Transportation Research Board Business Office 500 Fifth Street, NW Abstract: The Praktijkproef Amsterdam (Field Operational Test Integrated Network Management Amsterdam) is one of the first large-scale FoTs testing coordinated network wide deployment of traffic management in practice. After a successful Proof-of-Concept (PoC) in 2009, in 2013 the first parts of the concept approach will be tested in the field, working towards a full deployment from 2014 onwards. This paper describes the hierarchal control approach that has been developed in order to operationalise the control paradigm developed during the PoC. The paper explains this control framework, the functional architecture, and the main control algorithms. The paper also shows the operational principles of the control approach in a simple test network. Furthermore, the outcomes of an extensive functional test in a simulation mock-up of the network in which the approach will be implemented are discussed.
