Abstract:

This study estimates the effects on railway economic efficiency of the railway reform in Spain using a panel data set that covers all companies with freight operations during the period 2001-2010. Two models of costs frontiers are estimated; a deterministic model and a model of stochastic frontiers which find improvements in economic efficiency due to the vertical separation in transport management and infrastructure, and to access to private companies being allowed in freight management. Increasing density economies are also presented.
