Abstract:

This paper investigates the existence and the characteristics of macroscopic fundamental diagram in the urban expressway network in metropolis, by analyzing real data in Shanghai, China. In this paper, the existence of the hysteresis phenomena is examined under different traffic situations. Based on the comprehensive analysis, we verified the relationship between hysteresis phenomena and the inhomogeneity of traffic distribution. Furthermore, we defined two parameters to analyze the hysteresis phenomena: the high and low occupancy indices. Another major contribution of this paper is that we introduce the index of congestion to analyze the length of the hysteresis loop (∆O) and the drop of network flow (∆Q). The direct relationship between the length of the hysteresis loop (∆O) and the congestion is proved. The drop of network flow (∆Q) due to the hysteresis phenomena is relatively constant, about 13 veh/5min/lane.
