Title: Investigating Powered Two-Wheelers Overtaking Behavior in Urban Arterials
Accession Number: 01517522

Availability: Transportation Research Board Business Office 500 Fifth Street, NW Abstract: PTW drivers’ option to overtake or not is dominated by factors that are rarely investigated, especially in urban arterials, due to the difficulties in measuring the actual trajectories of PTWs. The aim of this paper is to model the overtaking behavior of PTW drivers and reveal the significant factors that may affect overtaking in urban arterials. Statistical analyses are conducted on the basis of detailed PTW trajectory data collected in 500 msec intervals using video recordings from an urban arterial in Athens, Greece. Overtaking attempts are categorized and modeled with regard to whether the specific maneuver is associated to a lane changing or whether it occurs without speed change and/or lane change (on the fly). Models are also developed in relation to the type of PTW. Results show that speed difference from lead vehicle is the most significant factor. Differences in the PTW overtaking patterns between mopeds and motorcycles, as well as on the fly and oblique overtaking maneuvers are identified and discussed.
