Abstract:

This research aimed to comprehensively analyze acceptable walking time (AWT) stated by pedestrians in cities exposed to Mediterranean or Middle Eastern weather conditions. The research relied upon a questionnaire that was distributed over 1675 inhabitants of Damascus and its rural circumferential area. The research considered walking for two trip purposes (i.e., work and shopping) and also examined walking to/from three station types (i.e., metro stations, bus stops, and parking lots). For each trip purpose and each station type, the cumulative distribution function of the corresponding AWT was generated. AWT stated by respondents was also compared with the actual walking time observed in the field. Additionally, the impact of socio-economic and demographic characteristics on AWT was summarized in special tables containing adjustment factors. At the neighborhood level, AWT and percentage of work trips made by walking both were estimated using multiple linear regression models. The research provides walking characteristics that can help in the planning and design of transportation networks, especially those networks where walking and transit are popular transportation modes.
