Abstract:

This issue contains 14 papers concerned with urban and traffic data systems. Specific topics addressed in this issue include: axle-based and length-based vehicle classification stations; reduced traffic data collection plans; length-based vehicle classification schemes and length bin boundaries; traffic sensor location on a highway network; a tablet-based traffic counting application designed to minimize human error; sensor performance in measuring vehicle length; quality assurance procedures for nonmotorized traffic count data; and classification of bicycle traffic patterns. Other topics addressed in this issue include: pedestrian data collection using a motion-sensing device; estimating annual average daily bicyclists; generating site-specific axle load factors for the Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG); correlation-based clustering of traffic data for the MEPDG; clustering vehicle classification data to support regional implementation of the MEPDG; and the impact of various trucks on pavement design and analysis.
