Abstract:
This issue contains 22 papers concerned with railroads. Specific topics discussed include: high-speed rail network design and station location; competitiveness of high-speed rail; economic impacts of Amtrak intercity passenger rail service; high-speed rail corridors; and the impacts of short-term land use by high-speed rail on large metropolises. Other topics covered include: high-speed rail train scheduling; dynamic wheel loads of high-speed rail; predicting potential railway operational disruptions; periodic railway timetabling problems; and the impact of European railway traffic management system on human performance in railway operations. This issue also addresses: rail operating cost models; integrated risk reduction strategies for rail transport of hazardous materials; capacity of single- and double-track rail lines; the use of recycled tire rubber to modify track-substructure interaction; ballast shear strength; track stiffness transition zones; rail transit optimization models; temperature measurement in continuous-welded rail; three-dimensional imaging of internal rail flaws; railroad ballast behavior under repeated loading; aggregate properties influencing railroad ballast performance; and rail seat pressure distribution in concrete crossties.
