Abstract:

The objectives of this project were to evaluate the practicality and effectiveness of the laser diffraction (LD) method to measure the particle size distribution (PSD) and total surface area of cement powder compared with current methods in use by the state departments of transportation and to prepare a test method to measure PSD and total surface area of cement powder by LD in American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) standard format. It was found that LD provides PSD, specific surface area, and a good approximation of the 45-μm sieve residue. A standard method in AASHTO format is presented in Appendix A.
