Many corporations build a culture of sustainability by establishing standards of performance and implementing continuous process improvement (CPI). This article provides a summary of a sustainability pilot project in which CPI was applied in the support of a humanitarian initiative to provide safe water in bateys—the sugar mill company towns—of the Dominican Republic. The goals were to improve project efficiency and effectiveness, ensure funding flow, and stimulate voluntary efforts to sustain the project throughout its expected span.
