Abstract:

Research has helped keep railroads running efficiently and safely since the early days of the 19th century. This special issue provides many examples of this tradition continuing today. The railroad industry successfully provides safe and efficient freight and passenger transportation largely by implementing research results. Examples highlighted in this issue are drawn from the disciplines of civil, mechanical and electrical engineering, and from the science of human factors.
