In rapid developing countries like China, newly developed satellite towns around big cities attract people to move in by lower housing prices and better environment. However, longer commute distance tends to make people depend on motorized mode and causes environment and traffic problems. How many people will accept the separation of residential and work place? Does it have relationship with current travel mode and vehicle ownership? To answer these questions, it is important to understand the factors that affect travel mode choice and residential location choice. In this study, travel modes are categorized as private motorized transport, and other transport, which includes public transport, walk, bicycle and e-bike. Based on Logit model, which is widely used in mode choice and policy analysis, and copula method, newly used in dependence study, the authors try to explore the dependence between the travel mode and residential location choice implied by unobservable factors.
