Abstract:

This paper presents a field test program for fatigue crack monitoring on a steel I-girder bridge located in a busy highway route in Maryland. Acoustic emission (AE) monitoring of an existing fatigue crack on the connection plate was performed using piezoelectric film AE sensor and laser sensor was used to continuously measure the differential deflection between two adjacent girders. The triggered AE signals measured by the piezoelectric film AE sensors are presented and are believed to be associated with fatigue crack related AE events.
