Abstract:

Noise levels caused by road traffic have reached intolerable high levels in and around many urban areas all around the world. Because of health and general well-being related reasons, these noise levels have to be reduced. The noise produced at the tyre/road surface interface is one of the most important contributions to the overall traffic noise. Therefore noise reducing pavements are considered as solutions for noise level reduction in that interface. A thin layer asphalt surfacing is a commonly used noise reducing pavement technology in the Netherlands. In a previous project, trial sections of thin layer surfacings were built, and measurements of surface characteristics and tyre/road noise have been performed. This study is based on the analysis of the existing database. The noise levels on thin layer surfaces are investigated with different material properties and surface characteristics, including texture and sound absorption. It was found that differences in the mixture compositions and surface characteristics influence changes in noise levels. Based on these findings, regression based statistical models were developed for evaluating the tyre/road noise level caused by the road surface properties. Different combinations of the mixture compositions and surface characteristics were taken into account. The models developed in this study show great prediction effect and can be used for predicting the tyre/road noise generation in road engineering.
