Freight-related data are collected and analyzed to identify and understand goods movement, economic and transportation patterns along with needs, opportunities, deficiencies, and alternative courses of actions. Although there are many sources of freight information, virtually all current sources are mode specific and have limitations for freight transportation planning. The supply chain perspective provides the potential to bridge limitations in existing data and broaden the understanding of how goods move in a variety of planning applications.
