Title: Image Analysis of the Internal Structure of Warm-Mix Asphalt (WMA) Mixtures
Accession Number: 01373797
Record Type: Component
Abstract: Warm mix asphalt (WMA) constitutes an alternative for fabrication of asphalt mixtures at lower temperatures (in the range of 20°C to 50°C) than those used for conventional hot mix asphalt (HMA), with positive environmental, engineering, and economical effects. This paper focuses on the analysis of the mixture internal structure of WMA as compared to that of corresponding control-HMA mixtures. Hence, the main objective of the paper is to quantify the modifications induced on the asphalt mixture internal structure using four WMA technologies (Rediset®, Asphamin®, Sasobit®, and Evotherm DAT®), since these changes are related to the mixture performance. The analysis was based on X-ray Computed Tomography scanning and subsequent image analyses, conducted in terms of the air voids (AV) characteristics that included the distribution of content, size, and connectivity. Corresponding results suggests that the reduction of compaction temperature based on the inclusion of WMA additives, generated laboratory gyratory compacted specimens with similar AV characteristics (for mixtures compacted at similar TAV content values) to those obtained in conventional control-HMA mixtures. Comparison of road cores is limited at this time, although the data analyzed preliminarily supports the same conclusion provided for the gyratory compacted specimens. Specific recommendations were also included for improved fabrication of gyratory compacted specimens produced for WMA mixture evaluation.
