Title: Review of Roundabout Public Information and Educational Programs and Materials
Accession Number: 01368383
Record Type: Component
Abstract: Modern roundabouts are becoming an increasingly popular design alternative based upon their demonstrated ability to reduce delay and improve safety in comparison to signalized and stop-controlled intersections. However, public information and education remains an important concern in order to realize these improvements to traffic operations and safety. This study involved a comprehensive review of existing programs and materials aimed at improving road user knowledge, skills, and abilities with respect to roundabouts. Comprehensive reviews of driver education manuals and state department of transportation websites were conducted for all 50 states. This review showed that roundabout content is included in 70 percent of state driver’s manuals and on 58 percent of state transportation department websites. A number of videos and other educational materials used by various state and local agencies were also identified. Collectively, these materials cover a broad range of issues, including general operational instructions, the benefits of roundabouts in comparison to alternative intersection treatments, and concerns related to bicyclists, pedestrians, commercial motor vehicles, and emergency vehicles. Among these content areas, coverage is not particularly good with respect to lane selection and other issues unique to multi-lane roundabouts. With the continuing construction of new roundabouts across the United States, the inventory presented herein provides a valuable reference tool for researchers and practitioners. While there has been much progress in recent years, additional efforts are needed in order to provide clear and consistent information at a national level.
