Abstract:

The purpose of this paper is to describe several of the key aspects of leadership as they relate to team effectiveness and, in the process, describe how effective leadership is necessary to support team-based safety initiatives that are of interest to the railroad industry such as crew resource management, behavioral safety, close call reporting, and other similar programs. The particular focus here is on leadership's role in creating a positive safety culture that supports and provides the foundation for the effectiveness of safety interventions. Although the focus is on safety culture (and climate), the leadership principles described apply to other domains as well.
