Availability: Find a library where document is available Abstract: Research into the fundamental effects of aviation on the environment cannot be converted into improvements that would reduce those effects unless the recommended technologies are actually developed and deployed in the field. The pace and scope of deploying new technologies within the aviation enterprise in an increasingly complex future depends on numerous factors, many of which are not well understood. These factors include the following: How to introduce new technologies within the existing aviation system interface constraints; How to make new technologies marketable; How to determine costs and benefits of new technologies; How to develop optimal trade-offs; How to stimulate commercial risk-taking; How to approach risk-averse financial institutions; How to meet future demands; and How to address future issues. This paper discusses the current state of technology deployment in the aviation industry, outlines a future vision for technology deployment, and lists research needs in this area.
