Title: Understanding Pedestrian Perceptions of Sidewalk Performance: Comparative Study Between Bangkok and Jakarta
Accession Number: 01334658
Record Type: Component
Abstract: This paper presents relationships among pedestrian perception of interaction between pedestrians and street vendors, perception of traffic and movement, perception of sidewalk condition, and perception of sidewalk performance. A comparison of pedestrian perceptions about walking experience along the sidewalk with street vendor activities between Bangkok and Jakarta is demonstrated. Using empirical data, we show that qualitative variables based on pedestrian perceptions have relatively significant role in assessing sidewalk performance. The structural equation modeling result reveals that pedestrian perception about traffic and movement is the most important factor in assessing sidewalk performance in Bangkok. On the other hand, pedestrian perception of sidewalk condition is found to be the most important parameter in Jakarta. The finding in this study encourages the importance of combining the qualitative and quantitative variables in sidewalk performance assessment. Pedestrian perceptions as qualitative variables should be combined with traditional traffic variables such as volume, speed, and capacity in order to form a better sidewalk performance assessment. In addition, it is recommended for policy makers and urban planners to pay more attention to user’s perception in sidewalk design.
