Title: Operator and Sample Variation of Rice Gravity Measured in HMA Mixtures
Accession Number: 01336718
Record Type: Component
Abstract: The theoretical maximum specific gravity or Rice gravity (Gmm) is commonly used for hot mix asphalt (HMA) mix design, construction quality control and quality assurance purposes. Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (LADOTD) examined the possibilities of measuring Gmm of HMA mixtures from roadway cores instead of mixtures sampled and measured at plant. This brief study was initiated to investigate a comparative analysis of measuring Gmm of HMA mixtures sampled from five different roadway construction projects in the state of Louisiana. Determination of rice gravities for each individual project were conducted under three different scenarios: ( i) HMA mixtures sampled at a mixing plant by a LADOTD plant inspector, (ii) HMA mixtures sampled at a mixing plant by a Louisiana Transportation Research Center (LTRC) technician, and (iii) From roadway cores representative of plant mix samples, tested by a LTRC technician. Results indicated that the LTRC measured Gmm for roadway cores and mixtures measured at the plant were similar. Also, Gmm reported by the inspector at the plant showed similarity to the LTRC measured Gmm. Therefore, the study supports the application of Gmm results as measured from roadway cores or loose HMA mixtures (regardless of the test locations i.e. at the plant or in a separate lab) in calculation of density as a pay factor for HMA pavement.
