Abstract:

In this study, Vialit test, which is used for determination of aggregate-bitumen adhesion, was used to examine performance of pre-coated aggregates with bitumen. A total of three different gradations of basalt and one gradation for limestone were used. The binder used in this study is having a penetration value of 100/150 (AC20). Aggregates were coated with bitumen at the following aggregate weight rates: 0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0%. In the Vialit test, the amount of aggregate and bitumen to be applied on the plate was calculated in accordance with “AP-T68/06 Update of the Austroads Sprayed Seal Design Standard” test method; initial and final weights of aggregate were weighted, and the amount of loss of aggregate was determined. The optimum amount of bitumen was determined by conducting tests performed on samples at different precoated rates in different aggregate gradation and types and aggregate-bitumen adhesion was compared with the results obtained. Optimum bitumen rates of group AB, BB, CB, and CK aggregates were found at 2.0, 1.58, 1.53, and 1.57% respectively as a result of Vialit tests. Besides, precoated aggregate application has reduced losses of aggregate by 26.9, 61.2, 42.0, and 58.8%.
