Abstract:

This paper presents an empirical test of a tool that was developed to measure travellers’ satisfaction with travel: the satisfaction with travel scale (STS). STS measures travel satisfaction in terms of two affective (positive activation and positive deactivation) and one cognitive component. The STS was applied in the Netherlands in a survey held amongst car users. The results reported in this paper suggest that the reliability of the measurement scales is satisfactory to good, and also that the underlying constructs of STS (positive activation, positive deactivation and cognitive evaluation) are correlated, and are therefore likely to be indicative of an overarching concept of travel satisfaction. Regression analyses carried out with the three STS constructs suggest that various variables influence STS, such as experienced safety, being annoyed by other road users, the trip being tiring, being distracted by billboards and autonomy to choose speed and lane. In addition travel purpose and personal characteristics may play a role. Overall, the findings suggest that travellers’ reported satisfaction varies with changes in travel conditions in an intuitively and theoretically plausible way, providing support for the validity of the STS as a tool to measure satisfaction with travel.
