Abstract:

This paper aims to investigate the impacts of the convenience store to individual travel mode choices and their trip chaining and explores whether it actually can make individuals to shop locally or just encourage individual to do more excessive and inefficient shopping trips. Using data from 2,096 convenience store customers within and outside the Greater London Metropolitan Area, this paper explores how individuals access their convenience stores and how significant the influence of their socio-demographics, shopping types and trip chaining to their mode choice in visiting the stores. The ordered logit models and multinomial logit models used to explore these objectives. The results show that the proximity to home is the most significant variable that encourages customers to visit the convenience stores and two thirds of the respondents visited the stores on foot, whilst a quarter of them visited the stores by private car. Trip chaining is found to be very crucial in influencing customers’ mode choice and their visit frequency to the stores. Customers who tend to visit the convenience store on their return trip from places other than home are less likely to be frequent customers. On the other hand, the customers who use the convenience stores as their main shopping place are more likely become frequent visitors than those who use the stores just as their top-up and secondary shopping provider. The models also show that frequent shoppers (people who visit the stores at least a few times a week) are the ones most likely to visit the stores on foot. Interestingly, the estimation results also show that the location, density, shopping types and the day of the week are not significant in influencing the visiting travel modes. Customers who live at the most deprived areas are less likely to use a private car in visiting the stores.
