Title: Validation of Intelligent Compaction Measurement Systems for Practical Implementation
Accession Number: 01334258
Record Type: Component
Abstract: Compaction of roadway building materials is a critical element directly related to the long-term performance of the roadway. Roadway materials include in-situ soils, soils/aggregate bases, and Hot Mix Asphalt pavement. Compaction is a process that reduces the volume of materials into a smaller volume making the resulting mass denser and stronger. Compaction of soil materials should be compacted at the optimum moisture content. Hot Mix Asphalt materials are compacted at an optimum temperature to a level that represents four (4) percent air voids. Both materials are measured by multiple testing devices with multiple outputs to achieve the desired compaction. Intelligent Compaction is a technology used nationally and internationally to provide greater control and oversight of the compaction process. IC measurement systems also vary with the manufacturers. There are dimensionless Roller Measurement Values (RMV) values such as Compaction Meter Values (CMV) and Compaction Control Value (CCV). There are other RMVs that measure stiffness in units of MN/m such as ks, or with the dimension of a modulus in units of MN/m2 such as Evib. Roller-integrated measurement values can be used as a relative value for in-place density measurements during compaction operations. This paper also describes the IC validation process for practical implementation including: correctness and precision of GPS measurements, qualification of IC rollers, and various aspects of on-site IC roller system validation to serve as guidelines for agencies and practitioners.
