Abstract:

The Open Mode Integrated Transit System (OMITS) is a novel transit system utilizing dynamic matching and routing algorithms and integrating available transportation modes to plan trips. The system provides a stable, trustworthy, and economic solution for the overloaded and inefficient transportation system in major metropolitan areas. The OMITS relies on a newly developed technology called the cPhone, named after car Phone, which acts as a wireless phone and global positioning device with additional features critical to the operation of the system. Specifically, the cPhone serves as the user interface to the server whereby a user may request or offer service and receive routing instructions, among other functions. The OMITS, upon receiving a rider request, uses dynamic matching algorithms to find the most appropriate route for the user based on all available transit modes. On the other hand, when the OMITS receives a driver request, a shortest path routing algorithm instructs the driver of the best route while also instructing the driver of the location of other OMITS users that have requested rides and been matched with all or a portion of the driver's route. In this paper, a detailed outline of the OMITS is provided with a suggested matching algorithm. A case study is considered of commuters traveling from Bergen County, NJ to New York City via the George Washington Bridge. It is demonstrated that the benefits of implementing the OMITS in Bergen County alone could significantly reduce traffic congestion over the bridge while simultaneously decreasing fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
