Abstract:

Good bus route planning can not only improve passenger satisfaction, but also increase the number of passengers using public transportation. For a metropolitan city, route planning can relieve problems of traffic congestion and shortage of parking spaces. This study proposes a simulated annealing (SA)-based circular route optimization procedure to optimize the driving route for buses. When given a transport network structure in which the passenger demand for each link and the travel time of buses are all known, a circular route can be found using the method in such a way that the buses can serve more passengers during the same travel time. The experimental results show that compared with other methods, the proposed method can find better bus routes in shorter search times.
