Abstract:

This paper provides a bottom-up estimate of energy use and carbon dioxide emissions for the urban transport sector in 17 Chinese cities and a preliminary analysis of the major drivers of the growth in the last two decades. A database of self-reported indicators was developed and verified for 14 Chinese cities. In addition, Beijing and Shanghai were also included as reference cities to analyze the historic carbon trajectory as a result of the actual policies implemented since the early 1990s. The paper concludes by applying the potential carbon pathways on the entire set of cities to understand the potential impact of policies.
