Abstract:

Two groups of asphalt–aggregate mixtures were fabricated by two methods: gyratory compaction in the laboratory and roller compaction in the field. Two stress states were utilized in the flow number repeated load permanent deformation test, which was modified to provide radial and volumetric strains. The measured multiaxial response provided additional insight into quantifiable differences where gyratory compaction produced mixtures that were initially more resistant to permanent deformation than roller compaction; however, confounding effects of asphalt binder aging cannot be ignored. The field-compacted mixtures exhibited less dilation than the roller-compacted mixtures. However, both dilated in the less confined and more confined stress state. This did not agree with the volumetric consolidation observed in full-scale rutted wheelpaths. The implications of the phenomena are important because the flow number test using the asphalt mixture performance tester is extended to performance prediction beyond this application to index mixtures’ permanent deformation during mix design.
