Abstract:

The objective of the NCHRP 9-22 project is to develop a Quality Assurance (QA) system for asphalt pavements in conjunction with Performance Related Specifications (PRS). The project was originally intended to use version 1.0 of the AASHTO Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG) as the performance prediction simulator. However, since the probabilistic assessment of the MEPDG required hundreds, if not thousands, of solution simulations; the computational time was found to be excessive as such a quicker solution was mandatory. The study presented in this paper has been conducted as part of the effort associated with thermal fracture distress. This paper presents the development of a quick TC prediction methodology. An alternate program, similar to the one used in the MEPDG was developed. The stochastic framework using the prediction methodology is presented. The Rosenblueth method is employed to estimate the first and second moments (average and standard deviation) of TC and its service life. The Beta frequency distribution is introduced to represent the possible dispersion of TC and its service life. The cumulative Beta distributions created for both as-design Job Mix Formula (JMF) mix and as-constructed mix are then eventually compared in order to evaluate the contractor’s construction performance in the QA system. The proposed TC stochastic framework is being incorporated into the comprehensive PRS QA system, along with the other distresses: rutting and fatigue cracking.
