Abstract:

This study presents a methodology to calibrate and validate the left turning traffic operational characteristics and performance at signalized intersections for CORSIM. Field data analysis approach and a procedure to conduct appropriate calibration steps are proposed. Two field datasets were collected at three intersections. The first dataset was used to calibrate vehicle operation parameters for CORSIM. The second field data set was used to validate the calibrated CORSIM. It was found that the key parameters of left turn operational characteristic are mean start-up lost time, acceptable gap for left turn as well as the probabilities of jumpers and laggers. Two methods were proposed to estimate the left turn acceptable gap sets from field data for simulators. The calibration results showed that the Method 1, which calculates ten values corresponding to the 5th percentile to the 95th percentile, with an increment of 10 percent, on the cumulative frequency distribution curve of the acceptable gaps from the field data, can gain a delay value closer to the delay from the field. A set of general calibrated parameters was conducted based on the calibration results. The calibrated CORSIM then was validated using the second field dataset. The validation results showed that the stopped delays obtained from the calibrated CORSIM are not significantly different from the stopped delay obtained from the field data. This indicates that the simulation results from the calibrated CORSIM are valid.
