Abstract:

The recent advances of wireless technologies and rapid growth of video streaming applications enable the possibility of using these systems to support the traffic surveillance and internet-based real-time data transmission. This paper discusses the communication requirements of using 802.11g wireless technology, based on findings from a field experiment, to support real-time traffic surveillance systems. This study aimed to identify the relationship between jitter, which is easy to be measured, and the video quality of a traffic surveillance system. Jitter is the time delay between each packet sent to the receiver. In the field experiment, a traffic camera located along the roadside was wirelessly connected to a router located approximately 1000 feet from the site on the top a building. Important wireless communication measurements, such as jitter and packet delivery rate, were mapped to the surveillance video quality to explore the minimum communication system requirements. Moreover, tolerated jitter ranges were identified that would ensure smooth traffic surveillance video. Results indicated that jitter values less than one second do not affect the video quality for traffic surveillance purposes. Accordingly, a threshold buffer size was recommended for an Internet-based real time traffic surveillance that would provide video smoothness without any significant delay for real-time use. Traffic agencies can minimize the jitter using the threshold buffer size proposed in this study to ensure effective traffic surveillance.
