Abstract:

National Highways are the main economic corridors of Bangladesh. But these Highways take about 49 percentage share of all road fatalities in Bangladesh. As intersections are the main traffic conflicting points of road network, these require greater attention and careful reviews of accident hazards. Road Safety Audit Review (RSAR) offers promise to help reduce accidents and fatalities. RSAR for local conditions require a solid start point based on local accident pattern. This study attempts to evaluate the injury risk of in traffic accidents at intersection and to explore the factors that contribute to mortality and injury, the comprehensive historical accident record that is maintained by the Accident Research Institute, Bangladesh is used. Traffic crash data from 2000 to 2006 are used. Ordered Probit Regression is used to determine the associations between the probability of fatal and non-fatal accidents. RSAR procedure requires both day and night time checking of road-traffic hazards. In order to identify accident risk variations during day and night time two separate Ordered Probit Models for day-time and night-time accidents are developed. The outcomes of these models are compared with FHWA road safety audit prompt lists. Using severity reduction procedure, this study proposes a safety checklist for RSAR for intersections of National Highways of Bangladesh.
