Abstract:

Properly displaying messages of Major Traffic Generators (MTGs) on guide signs along highways will efficiently direct motorists to their destinations and reduce drivers' frustration. One feasible way to place such information is to use independent Supplemental Guide signs (SG), which are warranted by federal and state guidelines but are constrained by available space. With the increasing signing demand along urban freeways, spaces to accommodate such independent SG are normally very limited. In this paper, an alternative way of guide signing for MTGs is proposed and tested. The dependent Supplemental Plaques (SP) are placed on top of the Advance Guide (AG) and Exit Direction (ED) signs. A slide show test was conducted to evaluate and compare drivers' readability and comprehension to MTG messages on dependent SP and independent SG that appeared to subjects for a predefined time. The test also compared the impacts of dependent SP and independent SG on AG and ED signs. The correct response percentage was the major measurement of effectiveness of the test. A posterior questionnaire was conducted to collect the subjects' preferences of dependent SP and independent SG. Test results show that dependent SP performed as well as independent SG only in the case of single sign arrays. Posterior survey results indicate that drivers preferred dependent SP over independent SG in either single sign arrays or multiple sign arrays. It is recommended to place, as an alternative, the dependent SP on top of AG and ED signs for MTGs at urban freeway interchanges when spaces are limited.
