Title: Laboratory Evaluation of New Test Procedure for Measuring Flexural Strength of Base Binders

Availability: Transportation Research Board Business Office 500 Fifth Street, NW Abstract: This paper describes a new test methodology for determining the flexural strength of the binder component (i.e. minus No.40 component) of base and subbase materials. This test procedure involves preparation of small beam specimens and testing them flexurally under center point loading conditions. To achieve flexural loading of the test specimens, a special low cost, easy-to-operate prototype test device was built as a part of this research effort. The test method offers several advantages: quick turnaround time, ability produce results with small quantity of material and minimum technician effort required. Following the development of the test equipment and procedure, an experimental study was undertaken to evaluate the new test method with respect to its potential for use as a quality control tool for roadway base materials. Accordingly, samples from 19 different base materials from various parts of Texas was collected and subjected to a detailed laboratory study. The results demonstrated that good correlation can be established between the binder strength and material strength as determined by the Texas Triaxial Test conducted at 0-psi confining pressure for certain types of base materials such as crushed limestone and cement or flyash treated materials. However, reliable flexural strength could not be obtained for many sand and gravel materials as they did not yield consistent data. The data obtained from repeatability analyses provided an average coefficient of variation (COV) of 12.6% for the base binder flexural strength test that may be compared with a COV of 23.2% estimated for the 0-psi Texas Triaxial Test.
