This paper describes an investigation of possible differences in elderly driver gap acceptance behavior from other drivers when making left turns across oncoming traffic at unsignalized intersections. Elderly and other drivers were observed turning left at two unsignalized intersections with different speed limits of major roads. Statistical analyses were used to identify whether or not older drivers choose different gaps for left turns. Results indicates that drivers older than 70 were different from other drivers in gap selections and female drivers different from male drivers. Finally, traffic simulations of the observed and projected conditions were run in CORSIM with both default gap acceptance distribution and gap acceptance distributions from the statistical model to determine how the age differences of gap acceptance impact traffic operations.
