Abstract:

Numerous potential process variations can occur during the production of ready mixed concrete. Experimental testing was conducted to validate the performance of automated process control equipment for managing batches of ready mixed concrete and reducing process variations. The evaluated equipment, which is mounted on ready mixed concrete trucks, is designed to measure the slump of concrete in a rotating drum mixer and subsequently adjust the water content in the mixer as needed to reach the target slump. The experimental results indicated that the equipment accurately calculated the slump for a range of materials and mixture proportions and correctly adjusted the water content of individual batches to reach a target slump. Test data also indicated that water can be fully mixed even at agitation speed, thereby reducing the amount of high speed mixing required at the jobsite.
