Abstract:

Rates of walking and bicycling to school have been declining for decades, with implications for public health and the environment. Planners and policy makers are looking for ways to reverse the trend through such programs as Safe Routes to School. However, research on school travel leaves notable gaps: the majority of the current studies available on children’s biking behavior neglect high school students, and many of the studies focus on walking rather than biking. This study addresses both of these gaps. Our goal is to provide a better understanding of what factors encourage or discourage bicycling among high school students. We use data from a survey of students at Davis High School in Davis, CA to examine factors associated with bicycling to high school. Using a binary logistic regression model, the analysis points to the importance of individual, social-environment, and physical-environment factors as important in explaining bicycling to school for high school students. These results suggest the need for multi-pronged efforts to increase bicycling among high school students.
