Availability: Transportation Research Board Business Office 500 Fifth Street, NW Abstract: It is widely known that bus stops have a significant influence on the capacity of curb lane of roadways because they interfere with passing vehicles while buses maneuver to pull into and out of the bus stops. Studies on the influence of bus stops on capacity of signalized intersections have been attempted by some researchers and scholars in China and abroad. However, studies on the effect of bus stop on capacity of curb lane of roadway link are seldom found. The objective of this study is to investigate the quantitative impact of bus stops on capacity of curb lane of roadways in Beijing. A total of 31 bus bays and 19 curbside bus stops located on expressways, major arterials, minor arterials of Beijing are selected to conduct data collection. The concepts of bus impact time and bus occupancy ratio are introduced in this study. A statistical relationship between bus impact time and bus arrival rate is established based on the data collected from these 50 bus stops. Regression models of potential capacity versus frequency of bus are built up to quantitatively estimate the impact of bus stops on the capacity of curb lane. The results from this study will help bus transit operators and urban traffic management agencies understand the importance of optimizing transit operation as well as designs of bus stops along roadways to enhance public transit operation and improve levels of service on the roadway network.
