ConnDOT started photologging in 1973, and has owned and operated these ARAN® vehicles since 1995. ConnDOT researchers recently utilized photolog data to evaluate a cold in-place recycled (CIR) rehabilitation treatment. In 1998, a 3-inch CIR treatment was used to mitigate reflective cracking on a lightly traveled (ADT<5,000) four-lane divided highway (S.R. 695). The 3-inch CIR base was overlaid with a 2-inch hot-mix asphalt (HMA) wearing surface. An adjacent S.R. 695 section of pavement constructed with a conventional HMA base was used as a control. The control was paved in 1994, four years prior to the CIR pavement construction. This paper documents the methodologies employed to analyze over ten years of photolog data, including synchronizing CIR and control pavement photolog data in time to compare them at similar years of service. These data included transverse profiles, rut depths, International Roughness Index (IRI), grade, crack lengths, and crack widths. A brief history of Connecticut’s photolog program is provided. The paper describes ConnDOT’s ARAN® vehicles and their associated navigation tool called DigitalHIWAY, which has become a mainstream tool used daily by all ConnDOT bureaus. The paper describes a photolog testing technique to assess the performance of this CIR repair strategy, covers the techniques employed to analyze photolog data with SPSS® statistical software, and provides future pavement rehabilitation recommendations based upon the data analyzed.
