Abstract:
The primary purpose of the Bus Radio/automatic vehicle location (AVL) project is to replace an aging 450 MHz communication system that was approximately 11 years old at the inception of the project, and to upgrade the bus communications system to the 800 MHz radio system that Metropolitan Atlanta Regional Transportation Authority (MARTA) had recently installed for all other radio communications. In addition, MARTA desires to replace the obsolete AVL system installed on approximately one third of the fixed route fleet in 1996. The project was prompted in part by the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) who has reassigned public service bands from the 450MHz to the 800 MHz frequencies to accommodate new digital radios.
