Availability: Find a library where document is available Abstract: This paper offers a summary of the limited English language literature on the prevalence of driving under the influence (DUI) in the military, and a recounting of some of the distinctive measures the military has taken to combat the problem of DUI. The paper concludes with an overview of a variety of DUI prevention approaches mentioned by U.S. Navy personnel in ethnographic interviews conducted in the course of two five-year studies on alcohol and the military workplace among young sailors as well as careerists within the Navy. This paper's literature review, as well as the DUI-focused analysis of interviews with Navy personnel, primarily concern the Department of Defense (DoD) in the United States, but they include deployment overseas as well as the DUI prevention efforts of the military in several other countries. A noteworthy limitation of the literature is the paucity of peer-reviewed studies focusing explicitly on drinking and driving in the military; even fewer offer suggestions on military-specific DUI prevention approaches. Clearly, there is room for much more evaluation research in this area.
