An area type index applied to traffic analysis zones (TAZs) for travel demand model parameterization proved useful in interpreting the survey data. The survey responses were tabulated in aggregate and by area type at the intercept location. As a geographic measure of travel intensity (itself a function of population and employment density), area type proved to be a strong correlate to many survey measures. As might be expected, measures of utilitarian bicycle use were found to vary with area type; strong associations with area type were also found among measures of safety attitudes and habits, crash experience, seasonal variation in bicycle miles traveled, route selection criteria, perceptions of risk, facility and policy preference, and reasons for biking. Perhaps the most significant relationship found is with bicyclist characteristics, including age and household income. This descriptive analysis of the data suggests that bicycle travel might be reliably incorporated into a regional travel demand model which employs area type as a parameter; and that the relationship between bicycling, bicyclists and density may be complex and certainly deserving of further study.
