Abstract:

Signal Countdown devices have been used in Beijing and other cities for several years. However, traffic actuated controllers instead of pre-timed controllers were installed in Beijing several years ago. The Signal Countdown devices had been removed since then. The paper surveyed 200 pedestrians and 200 drivers in 2007 on their preferences toward signal countdown devices. The result shows that the majority of people prefer signal countdown devices and believe that the device is useful to alleviate the anxiety waiting for the green signal. The survey results provide decision making evidence for related traffic management.
