With the advent of web-based and interactive mapping technologies, it has been possible to gather, analyze, visualize and distribute geo-spatial information over the internet and across the world. The World Wide Web, serving as a medium to link various distributed stakeholders, can be used for collecting transport related geographic data. However, most systems focus on presenting pre-analyzed geo-spatial data on web. This paper presents an interactive web-based GIS tool being used to gather and disseminate such information. This online tool greatly enhances communication between stakeholders to foster public-private partnerships for better transportation planning and operations. This research focuses on truck parking along major freight corridors along interstate highways within the 10-state Mississippi Valley Region and state highways in Wisconsin. With increasing freight traffic on highways over the past decade, freight infrastructure is facing serious challenges in maintaining an uninterrupted flow of interstate movements. Communication via spatial information is essential in addressing such issues. Location specific information can be easily collected using the survey tool developed in this research. Distant participants can mark spots on an underlying Google map, answer questions, and make comments over the internet. The results from analysis of the collected information can be disseminated online graphically. We also introduce the process and results of applying this web-based survey tool to address truck parking issues in Mississippi Valley region.
