To improve the theoretical underpinning of modeling both aspects, the need-based theory of activity generation has been developed, which is based on the principle that the optimal frequency and duration of activities are determined by needs that gradually build up over time and the satisfaction of these needs by activities, which is a function of their duration. This paper describes a first empirical test and estimation of the need-based model. It estimates the parameters of the need recovery function and need fulfillment function based on stated data regarding respondents? average frequency and duration of activities, and the average associated travel time. The results indicate expected differences in the speed of need recovery and need fulfillment and that main occupation and gender affect the functions in a plausible way.
