Fortunately, public transport is becoming increasingly less competitive in India and most of the growing mobility demands are being met by private vehicle use. Roadway congestion is mounting and further impacting reliability, speed and capacity of the public transport system. While this transport problem is not unique to India, or to the world, its scale in India is particularly a challenge, however, the National Government’s response is encouraging. India adopted a National Urban Transport Policy in 2006; established a seven-year $10 billion urban infrastructure investment program (Jawaharlal Nehru National Renewal Mission); and is initiating modern comprehensive planning efforts to maximize smart investments of these funds. These capacity building initiatives for urban transport are described in this paper along with several sustainable urban transport toolkits that have been developed by the Ministry of Urban Development to assist cities improve their planning efforts.
