Abstract:

The applications, operations, and development of the driverless transit in Taipei are discussed in this paper. The main difference between the driverless transit application at airports (circulation) and urban areas (through movement) is the distance traveled. The 10.9-km, 12-station driverless medium capacity transit (MCT) Muzha Line in Taipei carries more than 90,000 passengers a day. After 12 years of operations, it is successful in reducing traffic congestion; improving air quality, and promoting transit-oriented development. The most important lesson learned is that for a proprietary driverless transit system to work, a carefully negotiated contract that includes not only the initial supply of vehicles and control systems, but also future extension and new vehicle supply must be included in the very beginning. This is to avoid any misunderstandings or litigations between the operator and the supplier.
