Abstract:

Limited research has been performed to investigate the response of hollow precast prestressed reinforced concrete piles under lateral loading. Past research has shown that piles of this configuration exhibit a response with limited ductility under cyclic loading. In order to investigate the performance of piles of this configuration, three dimensional nonlinear finite element analyses using ABAQUS\Standard have been performed. The model with nominally defined properties was able to simulate the response of previously tested piles reasonably well. Results show, however, that careful consideration must be taken when defining the compression hardening, tension stiffening, and damage variables for the concrete damaged plasticity model. Therefore, a method based on fracture mechanics and reinforced concrete design has been developed to consistently define constitutive model parameters. Additional analyses were then performed to investigate sensitivity of the model to constitutive parameters such as fracture energy, tensile strength, and compressive damage. Effects of varying prestress force and volumetric transverse reinforcement ratio were also investigated. Results indicated that the concrete tensile strength, fracture energy, and prestressing force are the most influential parameters on the performance of the pile model. It was also determined that underestimating fracture energy can dramatically affect the prediction of strength and displacement ductility of the pile. Finally, transverse reinforcement ratio and degradation in the concrete stiffness in compression were found to have negligible effect on displacement ductility and load capacity.
